When people ask about the best time to take it, they usually mean the time of day, but the evidence points somewhere more useful: the meal matters far more than the clock. Because omega-3s are fat-soluble, taking them with food that contains fat is what actually gets more EPA and DHA into your body, and that single habit outweighs any morning-versus-night debate.

Why the meal matters more than the hour
EPA and DHA need dietary fat to be absorbed efficiently. Fat in a meal triggers bile release and the pancreatic enzymes that emulsify and package fats for uptake, and the omega-3s ride along with that process. A study by Lawson and Hughes (1988) showed that absorption of fish oil fatty acids rose substantially when the dose was taken with a high-fat meal compared with a low-fat one. Does the clock time matter at all?
For absorption, not much. The reason people still ask about timing usually comes down to two things: fishy reflux and routine. Taking fish oil with a substantial meal, and choosing a fresh, non-oxidised product, reduces the fishy burps that make some people take it at night to sleep through them. Beyond that, there is no strong evidence that an omega-3 taken at 8am behaves differently from the same dose at 8pm, provided both go down with food. Which omega 3 fish oil supplement to buy
Timing only pays off if the oil itself is worth absorbing, so the product choice matters. Read the combined EPA and DHA figure per serving rather than the headline “1000 mg fish oil” number, since the fatty-acid content is what does the work and is often much lower than the total oil. Favour a supplement that reports freshness or oxidation testing, ideally a low TOTOX value, because rancid oil is both unpleasant and less useful. The triglyceride (rTG or natural TG) form is well absorbed; the cheaper ethyl ester form absorbs somewhat less well without a fatty meal, which makes the meal habit matter even more. Cautions
