Elemental dose is the number that counts
The single most common dosing mistake is reading the wrong number off the label. A “500 mg magnesium glycinate” capsule does not contain 500 mg of magnesium; it contains 500 mg of the glycinate compound, of which only a fraction is elemental magnesium. Reputable labels state the elemental amount separately, and that is the figure to match against study doses and the safe upper limit. What the sleep studies actually used
Direct trials of magnesium for sleep are modest in number and size, so the honest evidence tier here is emerging rather than settled. A frequently cited randomised trial by Abbasi and colleagues (2012) gave older adults with insomnia 500 mg of magnesium daily for eight weeks and reported improvements in sleep time and sleep efficiency. A combination trial by Rondanelli and colleagues (2011) paired magnesium with melatonin and zinc in older adults and also found better sleep quality, though that design makes it hard to credit magnesium alone.
A 2021 systematic review by Mah and Pitre pooled the oral magnesium sleep trials and concluded the evidence is low-certainty, with small benefits at best. That is the fair summary: reasonable to try at a sensible dose, not a guaranteed fix.

What to look for in a magnesium glycinate supplement for sleep
The best magnesium glycinate dosage for sleep starts with reading the label correctly, then choosing a product that makes that easy. Look for the elemental magnesium per serving stated clearly, ideally in the 200–350 mg range so you stay at or below the supplemental upper limit while you find your level. Magnesium glycinate or bisglycinate is the form most people pick for evening use because it is well absorbed and less likely to loosen stools than oxide or citrate. Third-party testing from NSF, USP, or Informed Choice confirms the stated dose is real, which matters when you are dosing to a target. Avoid mega-dose products that pack 400 mg or more per capsule with no way to split it, and skip proprietary “sleep blends” that hide the magnesium amount inside an undisclosed mix. Cautions
Magnesium is well tolerated for most people, but higher doses can cause diarrhoea, cramping, and nausea, which is exactly why the 350 mg supplemental limit exists. People with reduced kidney function clear magnesium poorly and can build up dangerous levels, so they should only use supplements under medical supervision. Magnesium can also interact with certain antibiotics and bisphosphonates by reducing their absorption, so separate the doses and ask a pharmacist if you take regular medication.
