If you want omega-3s without fish, algae oil is the straightforward answer: it is the vegan source, it sidesteps ocean contaminants, and it delivers the same DHA your body would get from fish. If you want the most EPA per pound, standard fish oil usually wins on price and on high-EPA formulas, which are the ones best linked to mood. The honest headline is that these are not rival compounds. Both supply the same omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and the fish get theirs by eating algae in the first place. They are the same omega-3s from different points in the chain
This matters enough to say plainly. EPA and DHA are made by microalgae. Fish become rich in them by eating those algae, or by eating smaller fish that did. A fish oil capsule and an algae oil capsule can therefore contain the identical fatty acids; the difference is whether the oil was routed through a fish first. Algae oil takes it straight from the source, which is why it is the vegetarian and vegan route and why it starts life free of the pollutants fish accumulate.
A practical study by Arterburn and colleagues (2008) found DHA from algal-oil capsules was absorbed just as well as DHA from cooked salmon, which settles the “is plant-based omega-3 real omega-3” question for DHA. The main real-world gap is the EPA-to-DHA balance: many algae oils are DHA-dominant with modest EPA, while fish oils more often carry a substantial EPA dose.

The split is genuine and use-case driven. For mood specifically, an EPA-weighted meta-analysis by Liao and colleagues (2019) found the benefit tracked with EPA content, and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements omega-3 fact sheet summarises where the intake evidence stands. So the deciding number is EPA, not the label word “fish” or “algae.”
Which to buy for mood support
Buy on the EPA figure, then on the source that fits your life. If mood is the goal, find the EPA amount per serving and match it to the studied range rather than reading the total oil weight, which includes filler fats. A high-EPA fish oil tends to give you that EPA at the lowest cost, provided it is molecularly distilled and third-party tested for mercury and PCBs. Choose an algae oil if you are vegan or vegetarian, if fishy reflux puts you off, or if you simply want the cleanest starting point; just confirm it lists EPA separately, since a DHA-only algae oil may fall short of a mood target. For either, avoid proprietary blends that hide the EPA and DHA split behind one combined number. Both routes are legitimate; the wrong buy is the one where you cannot tell how much EPA you are actually getting.
Cautions and interactions
Omega-3s support mood and general health; they are not a treatment for depression or any diagnosed condition. Both fish and algae oil are generally well tolerated, with mild digestive upset or reflux the most common complaint. High doses can have a modest blood-thinning effect, so if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or you are due for surgery, clear your dose with a doctor first. People with a fish or shellfish allergy should be cautious with fish oil and may prefer algae oil, though allergy risk should still be checked. Persistent low mood needs proper care, not a supplement alone. Talk to your prescriber or pharmacist before starting either, especially at higher doses or alongside medication.
