Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that your body makes and also absorbs from food, concentrated in the brain, heart, and muscle. It has drawn interest as a calming supplement because of how it behaves in the nervous system, and “high-dose taurine for anxiety” is a search people run hoping for a number to follow. The direct answer is that no reliable human anxiety dose exists, so the useful thing this page can do is show what has actually been studied, what counts as a safe ceiling, and where a better-evidenced option sits.

What the evidence does and does not show
Most of the calming case for taurine rests on animal work. In rodent models, Kong and colleagues (2006) reported anxiety-reducing behaviour after taurine, and the proposed mechanism is that taurine interacts with GABA and glycine receptors, the same inhibitory pathways that many calming compounds act on. That is a plausible reason to be curious, but a mechanism in rats is not a treatment in people.
What is missing is the human layer. There are no good randomised trials testing taurine as an anxiety support in humans, so claims of a specific “anxiolytic dose” are running ahead of the data. Reading the science honestly, taurine sits at the emerging end of the scale for this use, not the well-studied end.
The doses that have actually been used
Because no anxiety trials set a dose, any number comes from taurine research done for other reasons or from safety reviews. Those studies and reviews cluster in a broad range, and a formal risk assessment by Shao and Hathcock (2008) proposed an observed safe level of around 3 g per day for healthy adults.

The practical read is that if you choose to try taurine, there is no anxiety-specific dose to aim for, and staying at or below roughly 3 g a day keeps you inside the range that has been reviewed for safety. More is not a shortcut to more calm.
What to look for in an L-theanine supplement for anxiety
If what you actually want is a calming amino acid you can dose with some confidence, L-theanine has the human evidence taurine lacks for this use. A randomised trial by Hidese and colleagues (2019) found that four weeks of L-theanine improved stress-related symptoms in healthy adults, and an earlier study by Kimura and colleagues (2007) showed it blunted physiological stress responses during a demanding task. When comparing products, read the label for the L-theanine dose per capsule, since trials used roughly 200 to 400 mg, and check that it lists pure L-theanine rather than hiding the amount inside a proprietary blend. Cautions
Taurine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults at studied doses, but “well tolerated” is not the same as “proven to help anxiety,” and the long-term picture at very high intakes is not well mapped. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a heart, kidney, or mental health condition, talk to a clinician before adding it. Do not use a calming supplement to paper over anxiety that is interfering with your daily life. Persistent or worsening anxiety deserves a proper assessment rather than a larger scoop of powder.
