Adaptogen

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola rosea (golden root)

Moderate evidence

An adaptogen from cold northern climates, traditionally used for fatigue and burnout. Best known for supporting mental stamina when you're running on empty.

Our pick, and why

Choosing a rhodiola rosea on iHerb

NOW Foods is the clear pick: it's the only one here that explicitly states both markers — min. 3% rosavins and min. 1% salidroside — in the exact SHR-5 trial ratio, at 500 mg of verified R. rosea. Gaia Herbs states rosavins (6 mg from 120 mg = ~5%, above the 3% threshold) but doesn't disclose salidroside at all, and 120 mg is at the low end of the studied range — it partially passes but leaves half the criterion unconfirmed. Thorne lists Rhodiola rosea root extract at 100 mg with no standardization stated — there's no way to confirm it matches the trialed extract ratio, and 100 mg is below the studied dose range. Thorne is a rigorous manufacturer, but this is a label transparency issue the criterion is specifically designed to catch.

How we judge these

Standardized to 3% rosavins / 1% salidroside (SHR-5 ratio), R. rosea species, 200–500 mg dose.

Where ashwagandha tends to calm, rhodiola tends to lift. It’s the adaptogen of choice for the kind of stress that shows up as exhaustion, brain fog and burnout rather than racing thoughts. Studies — many from Scandinavia and Russia where the plant grows wild — focus on stress-related fatigue and mental performance under load.

Because it can be mildly stimulating, rhodiola is a morning supplement, and pairs naturally with the energy and B-vitamin themes elsewhere on this site.

What to look for

  • Morning dosing to avoid interfering with sleep
