How Much Omega-3 Per Day for Mood?

Omega-3 fish oil is a source of the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA, the fats your brain and cell membranes are partly built from and cannot make in useful amounts on their own. When people ask how much to take for mood and brain health, the useful answer is not a single number but a range tied to what the research actually tested, and to the difference between the total fish oil on the label and the EPA and DHA inside it.

What the trials used

A 2019 meta-analysis by Liao and colleagues pooled controlled trials of omega-3s in depression and found the benefit concentrated in formulas that were predominantly EPA, at doses that generally reached a gram or more of EPA per day. An earlier meta-analysis and meta-regression by Mocking and colleagues (2016) reached the same broad conclusion: EPA-dominant supplements outperformed DHA-heavy ones for depressive symptoms. The signal is strongest as support alongside standard care, not as a stand-alone fix.

For general maintenance rather than mood support, the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements omega-3 fact sheet describes far lower intakes, and notes that most of the everyday health data rests on food-based EPA and DHA. The gap between a 300 mg maintenance intake and a 2 g research dose is large, which is exactly why reading the label matters.

EPA, DHA, and reading the label

The single most common mistake is dosing by the total fish oil figure. A capsule marked “1000 mg fish oil” often contains only 300 mg of actual EPA and DHA between them; the rest is other fats. To hit the amounts used in the mood studies you have to add up the EPA and DHA milligrams printed on the back, then work out how many capsules that takes.

Higher is not automatically better. Very high intakes can thin the blood slightly and upset the stomach, so the research range, not the maximum, is the sensible target.

What to look for in a high-EPA fish oil for mood

When you compare products, judge them on the numbers rather than the marketing. Check the EPA and DHA milligrams per serving and favour an EPA-predominant ratio if mood is your aim. Confirm how many capsules make up a “serving,” since a flattering per-serving figure can quietly mean three or four softgels. Look for third-party testing and a freshness or oxidation standard, because rancid oil is both unpleasant and less useful. A triglyceride or re-esterified triglyceride form is generally better absorbed than the cheaper ethyl ester. A sensible way to use it

Pick a dose in the research range, take it with a meal that contains some fat for better absorption, and hold it steady for two to three months before deciding whether it helps. If you take blood thinners, are heading for surgery, or manage a bleeding condition, clear a high dose with your prescriber first, since omega-3s have a mild blood-thinning effect. Fish oil supports mood; it does not replace treatment for a diagnosed condition.
